Future intranet manager
A group of approximately 15 intranet managers in global companies came together in Paris last week for the first JMC Intranet Manager Breakfast in 2009.
This presentation was used to kick off the discussion – which was quite lively! The participants themselves shared views on a number of closely related topics that are described briefly on the last few slides in the deck.
Enjoy, and please comment. (If you want a copy of the presentation in pdf, drop me a note, introduce yourself, and I’ll send it to you.)

Jane,
Thanks for providing us virtual followers with the opportunity to contribute along with the folks who were with you in Paris recently.
Slide 16 and 17 – Knowledge required and Skills required.
To my mind both these slides document the current situation for most Intranet managers rather than what is required i.e. what would be ideal.
Certainly in my opinion Skills required by intranet managers should have a larger spike out toward marketing (sales) and negotiation. Both things I’ve seen as key to success for intranet managers in stage 1 2 and 3 situations.

Dorje – I agree. The low rating for the marketing skills surprised me, as it has some other people who have reacted to this graph. I think intranets are very much about marketing (what you offer, to whom, how and at what “price” or effort).
Did you notice that intranet managers in Stage 1 rated “negotiation” skills higher than did the others? I think they are in a context where they need to negotiate more than you do when your intranet has become closer to the heart of the organization’s activities. What do you think about this difference?
